Hi, I'm considering a remap for my 2003 320D Sport. I've read a few bad reviews about companies getting it wrong and having to resort back to standard...........Can any short or long term damage be done to an engine when a remap has gone wrong?? If not........are there any side effects of having a remap done correctly, like extra strain on the gearbox and clutch?
Surely everything good in life has side effects?

I may be just being over cautious here.

    Thanks guys

Totaly agree with that, as its a 320d a generic performance map dropped on to your ecu shouldent be a problem, but its the cost thats the pisstake. you can be charged any thing from 180 to 250/300 for the same thing so look around. Using a forum vender is wise but you could get it done cheeper elswhare so look around.

There are instances of sub standard re-maps causing problems for the DPF. I also read a thread just yesterday in which forum vendor "The End" stated he had had to correct maps done by others that had caused running problems.

You will find that many of the forum vendors are spending time putting right poor quality maps at the moment. All the guys on here are trusted and responsible tuners with a great reputation. I use them, and wouldn't be doing that if there was any risk.

What price do you put on quality ?

I spend a lot of time fixing problems with cars where customers have had a remap made that causes problems with the cars gearbox,Dpf filter, running problems, removed Dpf filter and software has been made but the light still on dash or still try's to Regen or just does not make the power promised

All Remaps are not the same

I spend a lot of time testing and adjusting cars in the dyno when I develop our tuned files for a car or van

My advice is to stay away from companies that offer real cheap Remaps between 150-225 that send the file away to there tuner

Ask them if they make the remap them self (if they do ask them if they can have a look at what they are changing) or if they send it away or buy it in (send the file away to there German tuner, who my be sitting in a counsel flat making files in his bed room, this has been the case found out many times)if they buy the file in ask to speak to the person making your remap file for your car and do some research on them

I have had many people ringing me asking if I'm the person making the tuned file for there car as they have been told by the Moblie tuner saying he sends them to me which was not the case so please do check

If a tuner says he uses me please call so I can confirm this
We keep a record of all the cars we have made tune files for so I can always check

If the person can't give you the tuners company name and number then don't get your car remapped by them as they are hiding some think or putting on a tuned file they have just brought for 25-50 or any other file they had around which is wrong for your car

find a tuner with a dyno so you can see the before and after if needed or you are un sure

Also make sure they are using decent original diagnostics not hacked or copied software on a laptop as these can miss problems with the cars as they can not read all the ecu's

Remapping an E46 (both M47 and M57) puts considerable strain on the Dual Mass Flywheel, if the clutch pedal starts to vibrate at 1500-2500 when you power on it is a sure sign of a dying DMF (the same issue can also be cause by duff injectors however so it is not alwasy black and white)

As others have said, don't go mad and heed the advice of the mapper on the forum
