So, new member on here. Just parted with my third impreza, been driving them for the last twelve years and decided I needed a bit more class in my life.

Picked up a very nice E46, mega low miles and full BMW history(58k to be exact on an '03)

So, drop of about 80Bhp which doesn't really bother me as I drive like an old lady but if I was wanting to gain maybe 30-40 BHP back what would the best route be. Are they as easy to modify as the scoobs?

Loving the car, think I'll probably spend the next 12 years in beemers, already thinking 640ci or similar in a year or two. Wish I'd made the move sooner.

    Anyway, power suggestions please.

21 views with no replies, I'm used to forums where people answer simple questions. I have used the search function and found nothing of any use on the subject other than a guy in the south of England offering remaps.

Perhaps the cars drive better than the Subarus I'm used to but the people just aren't as friendly and ready to advise. Shame really.......................

yes was reading that the remap might give 20bhp or so but will improve the power delivery

Has anybody got experience of one of these remaps and is it worth the couple of hundred pound?

A 4 cylinder naturally aspirated German made engine will never be as tuneable as the turbocharged Japanese offering's you're used to.
My opinion is I wouldn't bother with a remap on any petrol engine that isn't turbocharged - but each to their own...
There's a bit of useful info on this link. A Guide To Tuning & Performance Upgrades for 4-Cylinder M4x Engines
Primarily for e36 models but concept is similar for the e46.
I don't agree 100% with everything on the thread, but its a good starting point for reference.

Don't agree 100% ? Haha why not ? unless it's because everything written is strictly for 4-pots

A common route for NASP tuning is to fit individual throttle bodies from a decent bike along with a tuned exhaust manifold. The ITB installation will require a remap and you need to make sure you get a good spot to install the MAP sensor so it can be quite a complex upgrade. However, loads of power usually!

Example: 2 litre 206 GTi 138 with ITB's, exhaust and remap goes from 138 to 190 bhp.

Note: I happen to have a set of CBR 600 throttle bodies going cheap :P

I've spent a lot of time tuning these engines

The biggest bang for your bucks is a well made remap to suit your engine

What you will see is 10-12 Bhp
What you are looking for is torque which will give you a better mother drive with a stronger pull
It also gets rid of the in visible caravan towing feeling these cars have

So when you need to pull away of the mark the revs will stay up instead of just dropping

If you look in my spencer section or on any bmw forum you will find post of customers with e46 318i that I have remapped over the years
    Or google
    bwchiptune 318i remap

If you are looking for a lot more then you will need to change the car or engine
