    Hi all ,

has anyone heard of using m52 2.8 pistons, rods and crank into a m50 2.5 engine.

Basiclly im power hungry and dont really want the hassle of fitting an m52 engine with ews, wiring looms blah blah or the expense of an M3 engine.

So i wanna tune my m50.

I was advised you can fit 2.8 pistons etc and make a sort of hybrid m50 2.8i and use the rest of 2.5 bits, management, wiring, head, vanos blah blah.

    Any ideas?

It will all fit, but if you are going to this amount of trouble you might as well drop the M54 330 parts in.

are you saying the 330 pistons, rods and crank will fit?

will the engine management have enough give to cope with another 0.5 litres? lol

    will i need to rebore?

i think some bigger injectors, a FPR and a custom soft will do the job. but i dunno about the fitting part of the job. i'd trust alpina, tho'..

Yes, you can fit either 330i or 2.8 bits into a 2.5 block although the 330i crank may foul the block, particularly old non Vanos blocks. They all have the 84mm bore so no reboring is needed or block machining. The 2.5 injectors should be okay, but you'll need a remap to alter the ignition timing and injector opening period. It would be fine for a 2.8 and SHOULD be okay for a 3 litre.

    Thanks brimstone,

So if i ran 2.8 internals the managment should cope. would i need 2.8 injectors from an m52?

If i went with 3.0 internals, could i have a custom chip made up to cover fueling etc?

To be honest ill probaly stick with the 2.8 parts as its only a .3l increase across 6 cyls.

Am i gonna see a good power increase?

Also when you say 3.0 parts do you mean 330i or M3 3.0?

so basically, mechanically-wise, all you need is crank, rods and pistons for this upgrade? no machining, no modification on block, head or anything else? straight swap?

If you use the 2.8 parts, don't you have to make sure they're from the steel-linered block, rather than Nikasil? I'm sure the rings are different.
