    Hi all am looking for some advice I own a 96 518i with a m43 engine is it possible to exchange the head with a m42 16v, and is it just a case of swapping over or is there any serious modding that is needid will the m43 ecu work etc.
    Amy help really apretiated thanks.

    Ps what are the hp gains with doing a change over ov the heads thanks Pete.

    i would imagine you would need ecu and engine wiring loom dont know about anything else, would prob be easier just to put the whole m42 engine in if not the m44 as the m42 suffered cylinder head problems such as cracking and badly warping causing regular head gasket failure

    Interesting am I wrong in thinking the m42 head will fit on to the m43 block am sure this is possible. As its much easier to change the head than the whole engine.

    It would quicker to change the engine over with the exhaust system,engine loom and flash the correct m42 software to the m43 Ecu
    As this will then keep the original ews and keys for the car
    If you change m43 head for the m42 head you will need to change the pistons as it has 4 valves per cylinder,timming chain,timing covers and so on which would take longer and cost more
