hi there, i remember a while ago hearing about different head gasket thicknesses will increase compression thus increasing performance, is this a bodge job or does it actually work in the real world? many thanks

yea, it can do, but that would be for a normally aspirated petrol car.
If you have a turbo, if anything you'd lower the compression ratio so you can use more boost.
Current BMW petrols are around the 10-11:1 compression ratio, which is fairly high, and why they make decent power.

If you increase the CR though, you put more strain on the fuel so might need to go for higher octane.

    Yes it does work.

However, while the head is off to change the gasket it may bebetter to have it skimmed to achieve the same effect as a thinner head gasket will be leess tolerant to imperfections
