I was going to get a remap in 2012, and from what I have been reading, it's worth getting any bmw software updates done prior to the remap, to address things such as lazy gearbox changes (which I occasionally have), and unimpressive fuel economy (ECU?).

What is the deal with these? Would they have automatically been applied during the manufactures warranty period if servicing was carried out there? Do they check if you have any prior to updating, do a blanket update, or just apply specific updates to address a specific problem?

I assume it is fairly straight forward to install assuming you have the code, so can any BMW specialist carry them out, or are the exclusive to main dealers?

Probably most importantly, is it an expensive procedure?

Also - is it possible to update the iDrive software to the new version???

    Thanks

If you're thinking of getting a remap done, you need to put it into a dealer or good independent to check and clear codes first as any later software update will wipe the remap. BMW normally need the car over 2 days and it costs around £150.
Should sort the gearbox and make idrive quicker.

It all depends what was done in the update
65 at a dealer was a very small update
Each module or Ecu could need updating if all have a update and the whole car up dated the this can take 14-15 hours
The dealers just need to plug the car in to there network and it takes over
If I need to do a update I 1 st have to update my tools for thar day, then log the car, send the log and wait for the update file which will allow me to program the car the same update as the dealers but I have to stand there and turn the ignition on and off and do other things to reset each programming stage for up to 16 hours
But if I need to just update the just one module I can that only where the dealers have to do all

BMW do a special rate if they do a total car update which is far cheaper than me standing there for 16 hours onsome cars which I can't afford to do
I've advised customers to go to BMW dealer to get a full update before after we have check and found it will take 14 hours, but it's always the ones who don't want to pay
want me to stand there all day just on there car and expect to pay £100
we can check what updates the car need but if it goes above 7 hours we can't price Match the dealers
I also warn customers that on the older cars 2004 e60 the ccc can dye while programming and may need a new one ££££££
As a few people have had this problem while there car has been programming at the dealers

Do BMW take any responsibility if your out of warranty CCC fails when it is in a main dealer garage? Would they insist that causes of any fault codes are dealt with prior to a 'full' update - as I assume this could also be potentially very expensive

Sounds like a bit of a grey area - or worse still a blank cheque moment

I'm sure i read somewhere recently that if you take your car to BMW they now 'protect' the ecu during the update process.

That's right...they tri-state some of the sensitive modules during the update process.

Sorry to but in but i was just wondering if BMW ever update software when the car is in for a service? Or would you have to ask them to do it?
