Hi all, im investigating the possibility of reducing the capacity of a s54b32 engine down to 3000cc to meet rallying regulations. Would it be possible to reduce the bore only, fitting bespoke pistons and head gasket and leaving bottom end standard. Probably fit bigger cams to get more power. I have an engine that has a bore/ring problem so it would be a suitable donor engine. I have a stand alone ecu (typhoon).Any advice/info would be greatly appreciated

I don't think so, it's going to be pretty tricky and it'll cost a fortune.

One thing that might be of help is that you can use an E36 M3 3.0 and fit a 3.2 head.
They've been done before either locking the vanos, or ran with an M3 3.2 ecu.

If you can find anywhere that says someone has fitted an S54 head onto a S50, then that's probably the way to go by using an M3 3.0 block and pistons.
It'll certainly be easier doing that than custom or forged pistons and trying to sleeve the block which could give some odd effects.

Thanks for the reply, anybody know if the s54 head would fit and would it be much advantage. I would need a fairly big increase in power and torque over the standard s50b32

Will S54 head fit a S50 block, or port the S50?

It's looking like an S54 won't fit on an S50.

I don't thank anyone has done this yet
It would be a shame to have to change your engine parts as its now setup on your car with the stand alone ecu system

You could use a bottom end from a e36 3.0i m3 and the use the head off a 3.2 evo then go alpha n

My barbados dealer johnathan still (bwchiptune barbados) builds these engines and rally cars for people
He will have 2 cars in the rally out there this year

I was told that you can fit an S50B30 crank with the S54 pistons (not sure which rods though) and you get 3068cc which you might get away with (86 stroke, 87mm bore, same as a 40thou overbore on std S50B30 engine.) This then makes a nice short stroke engine that will rev to over 9000rpm with the right cams and 12.5:1 pistons. On the other hand, there's lots of people out there running S50B32 engines in E36 M3's, they say they are 3 litre ones but I know for a fact that some arnt so you could just blatantly use the std S54, unless you are continuously winning I doubt if anyone would question it.

I intend writing to the MSA since I heard a story that they may be considering increasing the 3 litre limit as it precludes so many engine and car choices in the UK for rallying.

Just came back from the sol 2013 Barbados rally
One of the cars we where tuning there was a alpha n m3 with 3.0i bottom end high compression pistons 3.2i head shcrick 284 cams
The last rally this car did the week before we tuned it it came 44th
After we spent 3 days tuning and tweaking it was 10th on the 1st day aganst the same cars

Also using a 3.0i engine it had 100kg less weight added to it

would be interested to know what sort of figures that engine produces? I decided to chance reducing the bore of the s54b32 and fit schrick cams so might no in the next few weeks what the outcome will be
