    Hi everyone,

I'm looking to get some increased bhp out of my 2001 (Y) 320i. The budget is around £1000 including labour. What would be your recommended upgrades? I read the sticky on E46 upgrades but that stretches beyond my budget and includes suspension etc. I was thinking air intake, exhaust system and a remap + uprated brakes if required. Links to products would be great and an idea of labour at an independent garage rate would be brilliant.

    Thanks all

    PMcD

    hi mate

mod wise i dont thinh theres a massive amount that can be done without going really crazy to get bigger gains but you're on the right lines

    cat back exhaust
    K&n or similar
& remap once done should get you to around 185 bhp give or take a little depending on how healthy your car is running

will certainly make it more driveable and much more fun and shouldn't cost more than £500 ish all in.

with regards to labour rates will vary from garage to garage but down in Edinburgh I pay around £35 per hour which is certainly reasonable from a indy who knows his beemers extremely well.
    Hope that helps

Thanks furry, I'll look into it this week coming. I'll post a follow-up question: does it matter if I go for a full exhaust system or is it simply the back that I need for performance? This will be my first mod for performance so it's all new to me!

Cat back should be fine buddy as race cats are very expensive £££ and on a 320 won't see much power wise.

Ok, had a look about and am thinking about going for:

    Scorpion back box exhaust ~£245

    and Either:

    K&N 57i induction kit gen1 - £77
    or gen 2 - £150

Gen 2 is twice the price - anyone got any advice / bought either of them? Just wonder if the gen 2 is worth the extra.

    Thanks

you would need to check both in terms of filter sizes.?? not 100% sure
I think the gen 2 comes with heatshield and that really is a must if you are fitting cone type filter.

I'm going to sound like an old man here but I wouldn't bother. It's £1000 you'll never see back so you'd be better saving it and investing it in the extra cost of a 325i or 330i.

Is there really that much difference between the 320 and 325?

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Sphinx: I'm not really looking at it as an investment I'll see back, I'll probably run the car 'till it don't run no more! Just something that will increase my enjoyment of the car, but you're right of course - I won't see it back! In the end it's looking more like £550 all in for parts + labour + remap.

Roman: Yeah, not looking at massive gains. The car's been well maintained before I got it but will have lost a few horses in the 9 years so it's maybe sitting at 160 or something. Hopefully it'll be noticeably nippier after the mods.

For anyone that's interested I've gone for the Scorpion backbox with Monaco tailpipe (£232) and a k&n gen2 filter (£150).
