hi all, newbie on here but have read many posts in the pasts and found you all to be pretty helpful.

i have a 2002 e39 525d and have been looking into the decat idea, i have seen a few different pipes available for a pretty reasonable price but recently i read a post somwhere that said my car may have 4 cats on it, 2 in the downpipe and 2 underneath in the middle section. Ive looked underneath and it would appear to be so... so my question is if i buy a decat pipe for the downpipe will i need to remove the other two aswell to notice any difference?

has anyone done it with or without removing the 2nd set and what was the outcome?

also i have notices on gentle acceleration at around 2000rpm a sort of surging/pulsing, it stops when you accelereate harder tho?

any ideas, suggestions or advice would be great

    TIA
    ian

    Have a read

    Project 525D M Sport

The e39 525d has 2 small cat's just past the turbo, following the pipes down there are 2 flexi foils, the following section holds the last 2 cats, just replace the 1st 2 with the decat system and leave the last 2 in place, you dont need to remove them and if removed will play havock with your imissions as there will be nothing to filter the crap that should have been filtered through the 1st set...

    This is what you need,
    ST/STEEL BMW E39 530D 525D CAT DECAT EXHAUST DOWNPIPE!! | eBay

What i would advise is, fit a egr bypass in there and get it mapped, will do it the world of good. also the 525d (M57) engine has the crank case oil breather that will need changing along with the oil and filter, they perform well if you keep the oil clean. Mine had 193K before i sold her and its still going now..

I have just fitted a decat pipe as my car (2002 525d) was doing the same as yours. On light acceleration between 1500 and 2000rpm it was a bit hesitant. Since fitting the decat pipe it accelerates a lot smother through this range. I would recommend it to anybody,
i bought mine from powerspeed on ebay.

This is about £70 cheaper than the one mentioned in the other post and fitted perfectly.
