Although i love driving the car it would be nice to get some extra power possibly midrange/torque but anything to improve it, where would i start without spending loads of cash? cheers

To see worthwhile gains nothing is easy or cheap I'm afraid. If I were you I'd make sure it's running perfect, and spend time improving the brakes and suspension (which will enable you to drive it faster).

If it's the same engine as an e36 you can stick an m50 manifold on and get a remap, that gives really good gains

the brakes and suspension are all upgraded/lowered and handles really well, ive heard its hard finding an m50 manifold? but that sounds promising, any ideas what a remap would cost?

Either way you can remap the car to improve the power and torque from all these 523i it doesn't matter if it has the engine from the e36 or e46

If it's the same engine from the e36 then you can also do the m50 intake manifold as well for more power as well as a remap
You will have to watch out who Remaps this for you as most will tune it the same way as a 328i with m50 which will no give good gains if tuned this way

It has to be tuned a completely in a different way to how you would a 328i
