    Hi everyone,

Apologies first, i did post this originally in the 5 series section but in hind sight this section is probably more relevant

Having owned my BM for just over a couple of months now i'm really happy with it just one slight drawback with it and thats the MPG i'm getting. Now don't get me wrong, when i bought it i wasn't expecting 800 miles between visits to the petrol station, and i'm being realistic that it was never gonna be the most economical car to run. Having done some calculations, from a full tank to the yellow light coming on (370 miles later) i've calculated 26.4 mpg, the OBC is showing 25.7 so a slight variation there but not loads. A lot of my travelling is local stop start, however on this occasion at least half of the milage was motorway hovering between 60-70 mph.

I've seen posts asking what other owners MPG's are and they seem to vary from high teens to early 50's, so quite a difference there. Just wondering a couple of things really, does this seem a very low figure (or are the people stating 48+mpg expanding the truth?) and is there anything i can do to make it better. I'm aware of all the obviuos stuff like tyre pressures, carrying excess weight, heavy right foot (i do tend to be very light footed by the way), etc.

I've got the bits to change the transmission fluid as i've seen a few posts where people think this has improved MPG, the cars got 175k with full service history but no mention of a trans fluid change. A quick search on the web has come up with a few companies offering tuning boxes from £80 up to £400 and claiming upto 20% increase in fuel economy. Seems these are like a removable 're-map' that plugs in somewhere, anyone ever used one and are they as good as the sellers claim to be?

Any suggestions or examples of your Mpg on these oil burners.

    Cheers

Hi there and welcome to the forum.
It's obviously upto you but I would advise you that the plugin type boxes you refer to are not the best option for your car. You best bet would in fact be a remap which is all done via the diagnostics port and is basically recalibrating your original software stored within the ECU. You can gain approx 40bhp and 85Nm torque with a performance map and sometimes there is even a little MPG gain. If you want more of an MPG gain though there is always a ECO map option to go for instead.

You can get an extra 3-4 mpg more from a remap
If you mpg is low I would get a BMW Independent garage to look at the car

Check your thermostats and running temperatures.
