Hi does anyone know if it possible to fit an E46 steering wheel to an E36 without too much hassle?

I have a 94 M3 with the older type E36 wheel that im not too keen on, having driven a couple of E46's i much prefer their steering wheels so was thinking of doing a conversion.

I am not looking for a wheel with all the stereo controls etc, was just wondering if it is possible to swap one over and still have the airbag working?

    Hi

I've been look in to this, but there is a slip ring that is different & some issue with the air bag, which makes things difficult.

I did find a link, from google, on a lot of people using E38/E39 steering wheels, but they need to be of a certain year, pre 97' I think it was.

If you're using an aftermarket stereo, with the capability to use a standard cars wheel mounted stereo controls, I reckon it would be pretty easy to mate it up to the new wheels controls (if you were thinking of going this route?) but not to sure how easy/hard it would be to get cruise control working from it?

The later steering wheels are Dual stage on e46's so they are a no.

Also you will need a later slip ring possibly as later e36's have a 4 wire slip ring, if you already have a later slip ring fitted then you can fit a e38 or e39 steering wheel from before 03/99 as the slip rings are the same size but you will have to do some rewiring as they have a 7 wire ring, so the horn won't work.

See this if you want to get technical http://www.jaroslavklima.com/blog/20...ing-wheel.html

Cheers all, i am not bothered about any steering wheel mounted controls as my car does not have any at present. I am mainly after something nicer to look at that has a more ergonomic grip withough going down the route or removing the airbag and getting a race type wheel.

As another thought i have noticed that late model Compacts have a much newer looking wheel so was wondering if that might fit an ealry E36 with less issues.
