I apologise if this has been covered before but I couldn't find a thread! Could a existing 325i ecu be mapped? Is it immobilised or any other horrors? Cheers

Ive had my 323ci dyno/remapped by EvolveAutomotive and its some of the best money Ive spent as it now pushes out more power than a 328 by about another 10bhp They are also BMW remap specialists so im glad I went to them rather than going the 'chipping' route (no offence to those that have) But its down to personal choice and budget

Chipping and remapping are functionally the same, just two different ways of getting a new map inside your ECU. One has the convenience of being able to be re-written easier than physically removing / changing the chip but really there is nothing to choose between them.

Whether you have to chip or remap is typically dictated by your ECU hardware.

323 and 328 typically can't be chipped. 325 can be-essentially a 325 been chipped is far cheaper than been remapped, end of the day both achieve the same results but a chip is a lot cheaper than remap the difference between the 2 is this, basically, a 325 has a chip that can be removed and replaced by a chip that is programmed for the fuel etc it is in.A 323/328 has a chip that can be reprogrammed for the same effect but is far more difficult to remove

    I believe you are wrong.

Some chips can be re-written ( flash or EEPROM) and some chips are burnt and cannot be re-written. In theory there isn't anything to stop you "chipping" a car that can be flashed. You could still choose to remove a chip even if it is re-writable. You just wouldn't as it is more work than necessary.

Also apparently the 328 ECU, although the same model number, is flashable on late systems and has to be chipped on early ones. However, the general advice is to not bother chipping and get a second hand flashable one.

Ive always believed that remaps are better than 'off the shelf' chips as they are designed specifically for the car (and mods if it has them) and chips are just a 'standard' run of the mill design that wont always be best for the car.

    Just IMO !!

There is nothing to stop a chip being prepared from a rolling road session and programmed specifically for your car while you wait and fitted, just the same as a remap. In fact that's how chipping started out.

I think i'd go with a remap, sounds more promising and be best suited for your own motor especially if have mods. Thanks for the info, appreciate it.
