Ah finally found the thread.......yes you can swap out the internals from the M54 engine. You will need to modify the sump pan slightly though because the crank is slightly larger so it catches the sump pan but this can be filed down fairly easily

i dare say it not silly if you like doing stuff like this as a challenge and like tinkering, but i think its silly soley from a financial point of view as it batters ya insurance premiums with modified declarations and the cost and time of stroking it and dialing it in is beyond the logic of just dropping the bigger power plant in complete to start with for a similar output...

each to their own i suppose...maybe im more of a bean counter than an engineer....
330i sport a big chunk of berlin...

Yeh I'm with you on that one.
I would but rather sell the car and buy a 328i/M3

It's going to be cheaper to swap in a m54 crank and pistons for me.

Finding a decent m3 lump then all the wiring is a nightmare !

I'd rather pull the engine and rebuild it with new shells and rings and a cometic gasket, at least I know its good to go, then its just a case of mapping, I think well under a grand and potentially 270 hp depending on CR and cams/injectors
