My lad is thinking about getting a 3 series E46 Diesel.

He was wondering which is the better and stronger engine to tune?

Someone told him that the 320td couldn't take much tuning, is that true?

First and best mod is the removal of the swirl flaps. Pretty much guarantees you will keep whatever horsepower you have over the alternative 'zero' horsepower and new motor requirement when it eats them.

Alternatively, keep the swirl flaps, and when the car does get hungry for them, swap the motor for a 330 motor

Go and wash your hands, then come back and search for swirl flaps on here. You will be glad of the hand washing as you will have nervously chewed through every nail by the time you finish reading.

if he can afford it get a 330, preferably a facelift model as they have the 6 speed box and the better engine.
