Although in relatively short ownership, I thought I’d spruce up the E60 by treating her to some TLC with Jason at B&W Chip Tune
She’s a 2004 530D, has approx. 90k on the clocks and pretty much standard, bar having blanks on the swirl flaps and E63 shoes – stock figures listed as 218bhp so was keen to see what it got on the rollers. I was aware the Turbo had been replaced backend of last year prior to ownership, but Jason kinda noticed without a mention (good start this) and guessing contributed to achieving just over 235BHP on initial runs
Whilst Jason pulled the default map of the car, we went over what I wanted to achieve and given I bought the 5 to replace the other half’s Mini Pooper as a family car, kinda opted not to go for all out angry power and something a bit more balanced. He proceeded to go to his side office to work some computer magic and get his calculation groove on…he mentioned he could have squeezed some more BHP out, but he tweaked the map with the other halfs driving in mind too
Come rollers time, it pushed out 279BHP (WTF indeed) with a very nice band of torque – I was more than happy with result really and couldn’t wait to take it for a spin!
Jason made me wait anyway LOL and played shotgun whilst he took it round the block for a test run and quick diagnostic check - Map was very evident as just the passenger, but when we came back, twas mine to take for Round 2….conveniently there’s a one way circuit around that entire estate so you can punch it a tad more, but wow….the difference is amazing and its certainly given the car the smile factor!
I'm guessing there is some variation on these figures between rollers etc, but whilst I was there another chappy had his 320d on them and although his stock run was meant to obtain 177bhp-ish, he was actually comfortably under – bit bad like, but it kinda made me feel even better about my readouts (Do hope he was equally chuffed with end result as a nice chap…just didn’t stick around long enough to find out)
Had a bit more driving time now and gotta say it still feels impressive - the other half however hasn’t noticed any difference (tut tut tut) although safe to say it’s actually slightly easier on the diesel now with around 4-5 MPG gains around town and due to added performance…less throttle is needed for any sensible driving. Works out well as she racks up the MPG, whilst I’ll continue to plunge the accelerator, have fun and bring it back down the balance the car delivers considering our completely opposite driving styles is perfecto! :
Gotta add, I do like a decent workshop and this session took place at the new gaff up in Hayes….although technically not finished yet, Its very impressive indeed - I’d happily recommend Jason and the B&W to all – if your in two minds about getting a map...do it, you won’t be disappointed!
