    i have a 325 ci.just wondering if i will course my car problems if i just stick a k&n air filter straight on to it

    Yes it will cause problems as you will need a heat shield.

    Using a K&N panel filter in your stock air box wont

    Not a lot. 2-3hp if anything at all. The stock BMW airbox is pretty good as is. A thinner cotton panel filter will allow a little more air in but nothing thats going to drastically alter the car.
    E46 2001 330ci m-sport, M3 bonnet, M3 wings, M3 mirrors, M3 bumper, diamond cut 19" M3 alloys, lowered, black nappa interior, ccfl angel eyes, black indicators, LED rear lights, Simota CAI

    saying "k&n filter" isn't specific enough.. although pretty much all bases have been covered by other members.

    If it's a panel filter in original airbox you'll make very very minor gains.. not really noticeable.

    If you are talking an induction kit or cone filter type setup you will lose power without a decent setup including heatshield.. even with proper well setup induction kit you aren't going to get any worthwhile gains, simply more noise!
