Bear in mind guys, their are different ZF boxes across the various incarnations of th 35d range with different safe torque limits

GA6HP26Z was replaced by GA6HP28Z and can support 700Nm
torque pulse is the shockwave from the compression and detonation of the fuel in the cylinder and the shockwave and power is then transmitted down the conrod onto the crankshaft as a twisting action of the crank between each detonation and then onto the drivetrain and hence it is highly destructive to a transmission and drivetrain and the crank, the more cylinders the more pulses per cycle so is less destructive as the crankshaft does not want to naturally twist as severely between actual torque pulses..
4 pots are worse than 6 pots and 6 pots are worse than 8 pot engines and so and so on..
torque pulse is why DMF's were invented to try damp and absorb the high torque pulses which is inherant to diesel engines making the car smoother and more petrol like in feel, and less destructive to the drivetrain on a manual box at least, auto's dont have DMF's so the torque pulse hits an auto box in its raw and undamped form....

torque is the raw turning power of the engine.
cars with good torque characteristics 'pull' from low down very well and spin up quicker.
top gear did a test on a mitsi evo and floored it in 6th at 30 mph...15 seconds later it had got to 40.
do that in a 535d and you would be at license loosing speeds 15 seconds later...thats torque
that can happen on sludgers aswell in the same circumstances of cubic capacity versus turbo size if you bolt too big a turbo on it, but you couldnt make a 2 litre block sludger and a huge turbo develope 400bhp in the first place the rev range is too short, nor could you make one strong enough in light alloy materials to handle the inherent high torque from a short rev range that goes with the territory ..
hence the advent of 335 smaller bi turbo's and twin sequential turbo's etc etc that spin up quicker ..
yup...it does illustrate what torque is though...of course, if you had the evo in 2nd at 30 mph...15 seconds later it would've trounced the 535d through the gears and got to the far side of 120/130...and thats power.
