As the title says, currently have a 325 but was playing with the idea of a 3.5 straight 6 engine from the 5 series (thought about M series engine but too pricey). Anyone on here done it, and which year engine would be best, ie, easiest to put in and bolt up to existing gearbox and loom. Not really worried about the age of engine as it would have a slight rebuild while out of the car.

    Cheers guys.

As far as I know, you'd need the new box and loom too.

Use the Search function at the top of the page for this, A20 RYM did a big feature on this, it's somewhere as a sticky.

    In fact, here it is.

I personally would save up enough pennies and purchase the Motorsport engine

That link only refers to 3 series engines.

A20 RYM, need a bit more than 'pennies' for an M3 motor. I know of a guy that put the 3.5 in an e30, just wondered if it's been done in an e36.

I'd also be interested in what exactly needs doing for this conversion. I should imagine that although the engine from an E34/9 should drop straight onto the existing mounts there will be some custom fabrication required.

I believe a 540 engine has dropped in to an E36 before. It's definitely doable, it'll just be a case of time and money.

What budget are you working with? Are you doing the conversion yourself or are you going to get a garage to it?

    3.5 into an E30 Awesome

Have you sourced an engine yet? If not try here

Well the E30 BMW Alplina (B3.5s IIRC) was in fact just this!

A 3.5 6cyl taken from the 535i and shoved nicely into an E30. So yes it can be done, and may be worth trying to some leg work trying to see if there's a B3.5 owners forum with someone on it who knows the details of the engine job.

Cheers for the links a20 Rym, will be doing this myself as I know one end of a spanner from the other. I've swapped complete engines and looms before and know what a ballache of a job it is. As for budget, as little as possible! LOL
