    Hey folks

Very recently purchased a lovely '53 plate 318Ci. Really like the car and just wondered what power increasing mods are worth while? I don't have much money at the moment with being only 19 and sky high insurance but in the long term as I plan on keeping it for at least 3 years while doing my apprenticeship.

I'm not looking at anything crazy, what I can think of at the moment is some sort of upgrade to the air filter/maybe induction kit (don't want it to seem like I'm some sort of chav here...) an aftermarket exhaust and getting it mapped or chipped (not too sure what gains you get out of these as I've only had a diesel before this) Would like to know how these would affect my fuel consumption as well.

    So really nothing crazy.

But in the short term as my budget is tight I would love to get it sounding sweet. I don't want anything loud, like I said I'm used to a diesel so as far as making a petrol sound nice I'm not too hot with although it is so nice to hear a petrol when driving now. I'm looking at maybe just a backbox if anybody could recommend something not stupidly loud just a little sportier and has to be an oval tail pipe, love oval! or maybe a cat-back if that's going to affect the sound a lot but like I said not boy racer loud, just sporty and to tidy the back end up as the standard one doesn't look too great imo.

Anyway a lot of jibering on there folks but thank you for taking the time to read and hopefully I'll receive some helpful replies

hmm.. I've been doing some more research into tuning these engines and I see very little point in adding a full exhaust or chip/remap etc as it does so litttle. I think for now maybe a couple of subtle styling mods to make it mine will do. I still want it a little louder and an oval exit though if anybody could recommend a decent backbox that doesn't brake the bank. I see induction kits make it sound nice and throaty as well!

Yeah, you won't get much power out of your engine with an exhaust and induction kit, also with you being on a tight budget you need to think about how much your insurance would go up with these mods

without thinking about insurance prices for now/power I'd just like it a little louder, nothing nuts. My first car was a 1.6 N reg Polo which sounded horrible and wasn't worth spending a penny on, didn't keep that long, only a few months then a 02 plate tdi Ibiza 130bhp which was very nippy but sounded.. well... like a diesel lol and I had that for about 18 months and now I have this so I'm loving having the excitement of a revving petrol car which handles well and goes fairly well and would just like it to have a nicer soundtrack

crikey, just their backboxes look a bit expensive to me although I don't know what to compare that with. Might give mongoose a ring as they're fairly local to me and I've heard good reports about them for other cars. Might see what they recommend.
