Ok guys,I have a 1999 316i compact. The original engine is coming out and being replaced with a bigger lump. I am struggling to decide between two.

    I have the choice of a ...

    E36 328 m52 engine/box/loom/ecu ect OR

    E36 m3 3.0 s50 engine/box/loom/ecu ect.

Now their is a 1000 difference in price of the 328 and m3 engine but if it was worth while I would wait untill I have enough money.

Anyway,What I am thinking is the 328 is an awesome engine and yes I can put on a m50 inlet,s50 exhaust manifold and remap the ecu for m50 inlet higher rpm and achieve around 220hp but the m3 is like nearly 300hp to begin with. I jsu cant decide between the 2.

The car will see a fair amount of abuse from drift or track days but I will maintain which ever engine I choose.

So which would you guys choose and why ?

    Thanks.

i know someone who has put the M52 in a compact with the manni conversion and it is fully stripped out and is very quick.
quicker than a M3 in fact but is alot lighter and more nimble, so i would go for that.

Yeah, mine is getting fully stripped also mate. Im beginning to think that the M52 is the better option. The majority of people I know that drift use the 328. Some are on 200,000m and given death and still going strong.

Decided to go for the M52. Payment has been made and will be collected next week sometime.

Regarding tuning the M52. I plan on the following mods...

    M50 inlet manifold

Remap ecu for M50 inlet and higher RPM

    S50 (e36 m3) exhaust manifold

Anything else worth while upgrading ?

This sounds like a fun build, good choice on the M52 you will not be disappointed.
