My travelling is split 50/50 between urban and driving the 40 mile round trip to the office 3 times a week and a few long journeys thrown in for good measure.

My MPG never gets above 28 and I was expecting more than that even with the urban driving, my right foot is considerably less heavy than when I had my old 325i coupe as well.

On average i'm getting 450miles to the tank which matches the figures.

It's an auto running on run flats (tyre pressures ok). Does this sound right or could there be something wrong?

To me that sounds a bit low. How many miles on the clock? What temp is the engine getting up to on the hidden menu?

the OBC isn't perfect and I say to people to allow for a 10% inacuracy.
But your car is on the low side a bit with the MPG. When was the last time it was serviced? Has the oil breather been changed recently? And if it's got high miles then it's worth changing the fuel filter also.
Also as Dogsoldier has already said, check the hidden menu for the coolant temp. If it's not getting up to temp then this will be affecting your MPG figures. So it will simply need a new coolant temp sensor which aren't that expensive to buy.

+1 on what Darren has said.

Have a look here and this will explain the hidden menus and the 2 thermostats....

I have to change the stats and coolant too to get it up to temp....

Just thought I'd mention that I wondered the same thing with my old 728 as in my old merc it just had a throttle sensor with a needle, so I checked from fuel light on to fuel light on again and it was spot on in that car. I haven't checked on my new one though

i have just done 150 odd miles from South Bucks to Telford, my OBC shows 41.9mpg with me doing a steady 80mph, and a 10min run doing 80mph in 4th gear and 3000 revs (was trying to get a dpf regen going)

Rory - your mpg is low for a 530d auto mate. Around town i usually see 29-30 mpg, extra urban should be 32-36 mpg and motorways more.

The thermostats is a very common problem on the E60, so it wouldn't suprise me if your coolant temp was low (65-80C) - it should be 88-92C.
