I opened a thread earlier twhere I mentioned I was looking at either a Px Panel Filter as a direct swap or either Viper or Velocity kits.

I was just wondering which Piperx model you have

I used to fit Piper Cross filters to my BMW MINI's and found they made a bit of difference at the top end and improved the MPG. I thought it was in my head, until I swapped back to a standard one when I sold the last one.
I wouldn't recommend the foam as over time they perish, not sure what damage they'd do to your engine. I never had a single problem with my 5's engine, just got p*ssed with getting charged each time it went in for a new filter (even BM couldn't say why it had been changed......). The K&N oil never seemed to affect my car really, and I did probably around 40K with one in both motorway and town driving with absolutely no problems.

Pipercross panel filter in a 320i E36. Any good? I've heard it improves fuel economy slightly. I'm not that impressed with mine! Now that I've got down to 1/4 full line I can actually see the needle dropping as I drive 4 miles through town! Any difference in intake sound or throttle response?

K&N one I had was steel mesh and oiled cotton gauze. Pipercross I believe may be gauze too.

Don't know about the fuel economy but on a run to wales I managed to average with CC about 80-100mpg, but I was taking it real easy and careful...... Dunno really how the computer was working out, my Honda don't even do that!

I think it's the green filters that are foam, but don't quote me
