    Dear All,

My 330 Ci (E46) has developed this annoying rattle from the underside of the car more to the R/N/S. Had quick look whilst on a ramp and could seeing nothing obvious. So far I've:-

    1)Checked wheel nuts
2)Rear Suspension strut removed and appears in order, even swapped it with the offside.
    3)Rear Springs seem okay
    4)Exhaust is secure

Sounds almost metallic can find nothing lose. Any ideas please?

    Thanks

I would be checking that the rear brake pads are not ratting around in the caliper carriers because of a worn spring. Then I would be checking that the handbrake shoes in the disc are not loose or broken.....

Have you checked the "CATS" they can rattle sometimes!!

Especially if they have that really sweet collar on, with the metal tinkley bell, which if you caught the beast on the propshaft might give a metallic noise as its being bounced of the floor pan. Can be a real "DOG" to get to and a "PIG" of a job to change!! Just hope you have enough money "SQUIRRELLED" away if they need attention! Anyway enough "HORSEING" about !

    Good Luck

Check if it stops if you put your foot on the end of exhast pipe - I had this issue and it was the rubber exhaust hangar half way down the exhast (believe rattling against the heat shield as mentioned above).

Cost about £30 in pars from BMW, and got it fixed free with an MOT from a friendly garage

If it is post back as I have a link to a DIY somewhere...

As above really, check all exhaust shields. The cats have a heatshield around them and they can break up inside the causing a rattle. What about the the splash shields around the back of the brake discs.

Just sorted my rattling yesterday. It was one of the rear brake calipers. One of the prongs had snapped that hold the caliper in place.

    Hi,

Steve was right. Fast Parts had supplied the wrong pads and the retaining sping was smaller then the original. Hence the rattle. It's all sorted now and I no longer need to live in fear of the wheel falling off. On a positive note whilst stripping everything down I found a leaking rear shock which I have replaced with Bilsteins.

    Thanks
