Hey everyone was hoping a few of you guys could help me,which if any is the best air filter kit to go for on my e46 330i?
Have heard mixed reviews on this and other 6cyl engines not liking air filters.
    Is this true?

6cylinder, I have moved this thread to the tuning section of the forum where it will get more response

The reason that BMW's don't like induction kits is due to the heat of the engine bay. If you can shield the filter from this heat and provide a cold air stream directly to the filter then you should be fine

Have a read here http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/...uction-t17545/ and see if there is an application for your vehicle. Myself and steve23002 have this fitted

If you are purely looking for a replacement filter then Pipercross are good, http://www.pipercross.net/panelfilte...&m2=69&app=380

I had a gruppe m kit on the 323, it didnt seem to make any difference to performance but sounded miles better than the "boy racer" types of exhaust

yeah martyn..glad you chipped in mate...thot id made a bloomer sending back my simota carbon induction kit..gruppe m replica...because ad lost power...though i did say the sound was amazin...even gruppe m which is VERY expensive doesnt cut it....despite claim off 10bhp increases in power...no chnce from a naturally aspirated engine,,stick with a decent panel filter or an induction kit thats as far away frm the engin by as possible!!

Hey GAP, I'm looking at just the same for the same engine and year ('04 E46 330 Cab.)...

Has anyone any experience with the difference between the two?
Especially £/genuine difference in power, and how easy they are to fit...

Seems that the Pipercross panel filters are £35-40, with induction cone kits at approx £100, £200 and £300 for the different types.
    Pipercross Induction Kits

Would love to hear anything from anyone.

What is the response/speed/HP/acceleration difference, what about the sound difference?

    Thanks in advance,

    Psy

I think you are trying to judge whether you actually want or need this.

I bought the pipercross for my 02 mini cooper and on it's own it sounded terrific, bit like an exhaust upgrade but at the front of the car. I think I got some low rev pick up improvements but for me the sound was the main benefit.

I then fitted a magnex cat back exhaust which 'balanced' and complimented the sound from the air filter.

BHP gains 1-5 maybe added to the standard 115, and as said above some pick up benefits, but the main benefit is that you get an individual car that sounds amazing if you want that 'V8' sound.

I don't know whether I would add it to my 330 coupe as it is different in principle to the mini. perhaps if I had a smaller engined BM then I might consider a similar modification. All I can say is that on a v6 it would sound amazing.

You will need to advise your insurance company and will pay slightly more but as you won't be deriving much in the way of BHP inceases the cost will be very light.

You can remove the cone filter and wash it out as often as you like and simply respray with a light oil that comes with the cone.

The only issue with my filter was that the outer foam (it has an inner foam aswell) split along the seam I glued and stitched this back up. You might want to consider the K&N cone which is paper based I think and which can also be cleaned by you.

For what it's worth on the MINI's the cheap and most rewarding upgrades were filter, catback exhaust and possibly lower springs (eibach)

You will be smiling non stop if you go for this so be warned

    Wrenny, thanks for the above.

Sounds like the pipercross panel filters are a significant enough difference on their own then...

Has anyone experienced a SOUND difference with the PiperX panel filter with their 330?

    Thanks

Just ordered a Pipercross Panelfilter for my 2004 E46 330 Cab.
If anyone has any tips on fitting, I'd love to hear them.

I'll take a video clip of the before and after appearance and sound, and post links here when done.
