First time owner and poster. After suffering a rep-box for the last 6 years I recently bought a 728i Sport which I love! Went for the smallest engine as with Northern Irish Fuel prices it's all I can afford, but was pleasantly surprised with the performance for such a heavy car.
Whilst researching the e38 I got the impression that 25mpg was easily achievable with mixed driving and 27-28mpg was likely if you did a reasonable bit of cruising/steady driving. My daily commute is around 9-10 miles each way, 7 of which is steady driving out of town at between 38-45mph. This means I am quite often on the cusp between 4th/5th gear, more often in 4th with a resulting 22-23mpg average over a tank (averaged 32mpg on motorway run back from Kent to NI @ 70-75mph, so I'm happy the engine is not at fault). Long story short, I was considering getting a re-map to boost power & torque slightly in the hope that it might encourage the car to slip into (or stay) in 5th at these speeds and improving my average mpg (assuming a soft right foot). I've gleaned that a 5-10% power and torque improvement is possible with a remap and am aware of the insurance implications.
Does anyone have any experience of remapping the M52 2.8i? If so, have you found the car able to hold the higher gears longer at lower revs with an improvement in MPG? (perhaps I'm being naive and the gear changes are actually dictated by speed& revs and not speed/engine load!?!)
Any and all help greatly appreciated, cheers, C
