Just a general question, any body ever had a bolt that holds the shock to the hud on an e46 snap?, every time i have undone my shocks for the spring removal i have undone them from the top, as i had a front pinch bolt snap!, so i have been worried about ever touching the rear bolt!, is it prone to snapping?

    rear isnt as tight.
its up to you, but you sounded like you didnt want to be undoing the top mount again

top mount is a pain to get at if you want a quick job!, and if your trying to get the shock presure away from the car to test any upward forces then the bottom is the only way to go, as undoing the top still has upward push from the shock!, i need to undo the bottom so that i can disconnect the Arb bushes and see if the car sits any different at the rear!
just didn't want a repeat of the front strut pinch bolt issue!, Does that meen the rear bolt is stronger? less prone to snapping?

mine came loose really easily...the shock is meant to pivot about this bolt so it doesnt 'pinch' the shock very tightly

The bolt is the same as on the E36. I have done hundreds of them and never snapped one yet...
