From reading the german BMW forums, the most popular E46 mod currently is to use the gearlever from the E9* "x" models (i.e. the 4wd ones). The part number is 25117553172. It goes straight into all 5 speed E46's and won't foul on the driveshaft - a lot of BMW levers will foul on the driveshaft, like the Z4 3.0 shifter.

25117553172 is a straight swap, gives a shorter shift without making the gears really heavy.

Some comparisons here (not the E9x lever above though):

I checked out the german forums and looks like some people have mounted this wrong causing damage.

    Yeah, I speak German...

The E90/91 4wd stick only goes in one way - with the bend towards the rear of the car.

Personally I think the one from the Z3 2.8/3.0 looks good, but as far as I know they're not bent, meaning you almost hit the cubby hole under the climate every time you change gear! Some people bend them, which I wouldn't be doing... so that E90/91 stick looks good to me!

    Hi guys,

Rung up the dealers and they have told me all these parts need to ordered from Germany.

    Part list is as follows:
    BUSH BEARING OVAL L=26MM/SCHWARZ 1 03/2003 25117507695 £1.70+vat
    Bearing, shift lever 1 03/2003 25111220600 £6.17+vat
    Plastic washer 10X16X0,9 4 03/2003 25111220439 £0.15+vat
    Shift lever 1 25117553172 £40.49+vat

Which comes to a total of £57.52 including (17.5% vat)

The Shift lever is from a E92 330Xi Coupe is this correct as the diagrams are totally different for my 330 coupe

    http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=WE91&mospid=50512&btnr=25_0428& hg=25&fg=05&hl=10????

Has anyone actually used the E92 lever from this forum? I can't judge if Paddy2besure has or not as he has only stated he has done the mod which fixes the sloppyness.

Please could someone advise as last thing I want to do is screw my gearbox/driveshaft up.

Do you actually have to change the shift lever to fix the sloppyness or is that just a mod for shorter shift change???

    Many Thanks

It works... and they mount bent back towards the rear of the car - not sure how anyone could mount them the wrong way round..

Replacement bushes & stick in general will repair sloppiness... the E9x stick will make it a shorter shift & won't screw anything else up
