Hi folks, hope you are all well, second post on this site so after some more info please.
I understand from steve (moderator) the 523i estate I am thinking of buying next week has a 2.5i engine which is detuned, this then has the potential to be retuned to give 2.5i performance. Can anyone kindly tell me what would be involved in a retune, I am hoping it is something like remapping the fuel injection perhaps? Thanks for your time, vespa

on the E36 323 if you fit a 325 inlet manifold and a remap you wont be far off 190-200bhp
its the same for the 328i as well
i think its a member on here called alpina527 who makes a bolt on kit for the manifold

BMW restricted them by fitting a smaller diameter inlet manifold, this decreases the air-flow into the engine and reducing power. You can fit the larger inlet manifold from an E36 325i or E34 525i, the ports in the manifold are much larger. An M50 manifold, big bore throttle body and a remap may give you another 30bhp....

The manifold on the left is the restricted one, notice the difference in size in the ports between the restiricted one and the free flowing one on the right...

Thanks very much guys, if its just a manifold change is there a need to play with the fuel injection? If so would it be done at a dealer or specialist. Thank you, vespa

A remap would need to be done at a specialist..
I have heard that just the manifold gives good gains but to make the most of it a remap is needed as well...

Thanks steve, flying back next week to get a car. Will let you know if all well. Any hints on buying a S/Hand 523i or 528i estate, apart from a noisey vanos, cheers Vespa

Check all the pixels on the dash work correctly, front control arm bushes wear out every couple of years. Also check for mayonnaise on the dipstick and oil filler cap. Check the oil and coolant are clean..
Also make sure there are no ABS faults and all the warnbing lights work correctly.
They are pretty good cars TBH....

Definitely give Ian(alpina527) a shout, the man is a fountain of knowledge and his workmanship on these manifold kits is second to none. I have one on my 328 and ive nothing but to great things to say about it. Ian is also very helpful with any problems you have with fitting etc. Cant recommend enough tbh.

I think on a 2000 model it will have an M52 double vanos and the M50 manifold conversion wont work
send Ian alpina527 a PM and he will let you know
