After reading some 1s post the other day i noticed my car was steaming more than usual. so i decided to look under the filler cap, loads of white gunk, and also a tiny bit on the dipstick. no it was noted that the car had oil all down the back of the exhaust and all over the bottom of the gearbox! i thought it was the rocker cover gasket so i have bought 1 ready to fit, but i don't think a rocker cover would put water i thoil would it!

A leaking rocker gasket will not let water into the oil or coolant out. You need to top up the coolant to the correct level then use the car for a few days. I wouldnt worry until you check how much coolant its losing. As you have seen there are loads of threads on here where the condensation and mayo is normal in the cold weather. I started the M3 up yesterday for the 1st time in a week and there were clouds of condensation out of the exhaust, but it was -3 and there was hot damp air coming out of the exhaust.
Dont panic or make any rush decisions until you have checked it out properly

Top the coolant up, then take it for a nice long run and see what happens....

where should the water level be at? there wasn't any excessive pressure in the expansion bottle. just a little pish when i undid it. should the stick end raise up past the cap? or sit just below it?

Oil separator is NSF under manifold area, a few pipe can get brittle and split. Also oil separator can fail in colder weather, but as said mayo type gunk on the oil cap is normal in this weather.

Oil all over is not normal and need to find out where this is from, is this oil fresh or oil gunk been there a where type.
