I've taken a video of the steering rack from my car, as you can see the couplin looks fine, as does the track rods and ball joints!
the part in question looks like the steering box? if thats what the part i am videoing is? as you can see it rotates a few mm side to side without the rack moving! would that be a dead or dying rack? should it not be tight and any sort of turn should move the wheels? past half way though the video you can hear for a second or two a clunking sound when rotateing,
also dismis the heavy breathing as i have a bad cold and a chest infection,,, oh yes AND DIRT IN MY EYE AGAIN!!!!
ps the rack id is in the pic

i will check the rack codes and post up.

Looking through RealOEM, BMW apparently couldn't make up their mind with steering racks.

Worn rack, or severley worn track rod ends. From personal experience of the exact same problem, it's the rack. in reality there aren't that many different racks in the UK in mainstream E46's - go for anything 2002 onwards, get the numbers from the ID plaque on the steering box (integral to the rack). No difference in the basic rack dimensions in all years, so they all fit.
