Well a while ago i bought another rack from a 2005 car as mine was really light and i thought it was broken, well it apears it wasn't and the new rack had the same syptoms as the old 1, only its now heavy,,,lol that was a whileago now!
Any way today i was bored and came across the old rack, i decided to undo some bolts and nosey at how it works, i couldn't get the shaft(turning) out, so decided to put back together! after wards the shaft had a load more resistance. i undid a nut that i had taken off realising that it had a strong spring behind it!, on loosening off the rack became lighter and lighter! if your rack is light, just try turning this clockwise a notch at a time, it won't damage any thing!, This has me thinking that this bolt is the retro boost that bmw used to do to stiffen up the racks,, what do you think.

Well mate, that's the rack guide adjustment screw and it is use to adjust the steering stiffness...loosen the lock nut, turn the notch screw, then tighten lock nut . Got to be careful it doesn't start leaking from that point if the seals are disturbed.
