    hi the dme on this car has burned out and have got a second hand one with identical numbers on it should this work just by pluggin in or will i have a problem with the immbilizer have been told to swap chips in the ecu dont know which one to swap can some one help please did try and get ews and key for new ecu but could not get them

    On the E36, when swapping the ECU you need to ensure that the EWS module and Chip in the ignition key are also replaced.

    I'm not sure that there is a chip in the E46 that is interchangeable like some E36's

    Unfortunately to purchase EWS items from the dealer you need to provide proof of ownership, proof of identity and proof of address before they'll even place the order

    Perhaps motechmike or Simon from Emaps may be able to answer the interchangeable chip option on the E46

    Best to get the EWS re-aligned, I doubt BMW will as they wont work on 2nd had ECU's. A garage with Autologic might be able to do it. The chips are not interchangeable, the EWS is in the eeprom
