I've owned my M44 E36 318ti Sport in Avus Blue for a few months now (upgraded from '97 mazda 323... what a difference!) In that time I've carried out the following mods / repairs:
replaced suspension bushes with Powerflex all round, new track rods & ends, front arb drop links, replaced leaking breather pipes, & DISA valve, lowered 35mm on Apex springs (Boge stopped selling springs weeks before itried to order them...), front M3 splitter, rear M-Tech boot spoiler, 17" E46 radial multi spoke alloys refurbed in shadow chrome & new Uniroyal Rainsport 2 tyres all round, changed all fluids, had paintwork buffed, hella angel eyes, silvertec bulbs all round, braided brake lines
I will get some pics up next week as it needs a good clean...
It now looks & drives sweet as a nut, only I need more power - well more specifically more bottom end / mid range acceleration as I'm happy with how it picks up in 3rd over 3000-3500 rpm. I've decided on the following mods which dont cost the earth (relatively speaking) & hopefully should pretty much give me what I'm looking for without sacrificing too much comfort / smoothness:
Green cotton panel filter, BBTB, remove & clean inlet manifold, have injectors & ICV ultrasonically cleaned, engine balanced, lightweight flywheel & matching clutch (& bleed clutch fluid), z3 short shifter, some sort of exhaust upgrade - a set of headers will yield more gains that cat back system?? finally custom remap (i've heard good things about CNL)
I have the following questions:
Would it make an improvement if I fit a cold air feed to the stock airbox / green panel filter?
Flywheel - the best option I've found is buying the Valeo solid flywheel conversion kit; comes complete with sprung hub clutch (3 peice). Its £320 from ECP, & have it lightened further. has anyone had experience of this kit, not sure what the quality is like (i know they're oem supplier to some manufacturers, but this is a BM not a Ford!!)
Also I've bought a braided clutch line & I've read the M44 needs a male-male adaptor to fit this, where can I buy this from? is it a BMW part or aftermarket?
Finally, if I want to upgrade one exhaust section to boost performance would headers give better gains than a cat back? was thinking of headers & new back box (for the appearence) or can anyone suggest a better value for money exhaust mod? And can anyone recommend where to get a set of headers for the M44 to fit a compact?
Any other comments / advice on my plans much appreciated!
Sorry for the mammoth post, just wanted to get all the questions in one go - I dont know much about all this & researched a lot and now just need to iron out the details before I push the button & order parts...
Thanks in advance.
