The Evo version will not fit without the diff carrier & rear sub frame. The best bet is the standard m3 3.0ltr diff and change the output flange.

Other models had LSD, these were stamped with a 's' on them.

    Quote from: E36 323, 325 & 328 Tuning & Upgrade Options

    "Differential

Get a 3.15 ratio rear diff. The E36 325i and 3.0l M3 both had them (though you'll need to swap the output flanges on an M3 diff). The M3 diff has LSD as standard, you may find other models with LSD too. These will all have a "S" stamped on a metal tag on the diff.

For the 323 and 328 (that have 2.93 diffs),this will lower your geared top speed to 153mph (instead of 165mph). However, if you get your rev limit raised from 6500 to 7krpm, you'll be back to 165mph - if it really matters!

Note, M3 Evo (3.2l) diffs are not directly interchangeable. Fitting will require the Evo's diff carrier / rear sub frame too."

Not sure if this applies to your 318is, maybe someone else can confirm... but I believe this is correct for your car.

the M3 EVO LSD wont fit without the differential carrier, its has a large case differential
The 3.0 M3 LSD will fit in the 318iS diff carrier but you will need to change the input flange and the output shafts
the input flange is held on with a nut which is secured by a locking ring, this will need replacing as you will have to damage it to get it out its not expensive though, just mind and use the correct torque setting for the nut or you will destroy the nose cone bearings in no time

as for the output shafts make sure you use the 318iS ones, they will pop straight into the M3 LSD but the driveshaft couplings are a different size (i found this out to my expense) between the 4 cylinders, 6 cylinders and M3s

other than that its plain sailing, im not sure how the ratio will affect the drive, it could be shorter so better acceleration
while you have got it apart change the diff oil as well, the diff will thank you for it

the 318iS got a LSD as an optional extra but they are as rare as a honest politician
