I don't know what the going rate is but £100 for an LSD seems very worthwhile. Don't know if one from an e30 will fit so stk is your man on this one

If its from an E36 3l M3 it should fit OK but the flanges would need to be swapped.IIRC the 316 has a small case diff but a medium case diff will into the subframe OK,however if its from an M3 EVO then you would need the entire subframe from the EVO too cause its a large case diff so wont fit.I am looking into if an E30 diff will fit because they had a different rear suspension set-up...Still £100 for an LSD is very very good, the small case LSD's that come as OEM with your car are quite rare and go for £400-£500 easily. An M3 EVO LSD is far more common and considerbly cheaper-I picked up and entire M3 evo rear axle-including LSD,brakes etc for £300-but a 3l M3 LSD will go for £300 on its own

If you can find out which car the LSD is from would be the first thing to do but then again if it did not fit you could flog it off on Ebay for a fair bit more

Edit: having a look on realoem the E36 compact used the same LSD as the 316 coupe-as the compact had the same rear suspension as an E30 then an E30 LSD should fit

ti's have a different diff to the e36 coupe. An e30 diff (LSD or not) will not fit into your e36 coupe.
The actual lsd case inside the differential from an e30, can be shimmed in to fit an e36 medium case differential. I don't know if i'd trust your mechanic to do this
