It'd would be possibly one of the greatest engine disasters in peacetime...

The first point is that removing the extra material will firstly reduce the compression ratio, also it can weaken the piston quite significantly.

In hotrod mags, they might have been doing that to allow for increased boost from a supercharger.

Actually - could you have been reading about milling metal off the face of the engine block?

That can increase the compression ratio and possibly give more power if you can get the ignition timing set up, and also have high octane fuel.

ah thats right now i remember they mill the top of the piston to save blow back (compression going passed the rings)
    when putting on a charger
    hmmmm super charger sound like
    fun cheers for the reply

You did well to increase power while decreasing the compression ratio! Normally compression ratio is reduced as mentioned above to allow running forced induction without detonation occuring
As a standalone modification it will reduce the engines ability to make power though.

I skimmed the head on my 350LC to make it go quicker (along with a few other things..). Never had so much fun in my life, I also had a huge collection of piston ashtrays for my troubles..
