Im a complete newbie with BMWs so excuse my ignorance. Ive just bought a 1997 E36 318is M Sport which I believe to be 140bhp. How tuneable are they? And the costs involed? Not looking for anything major as my insurance will go mad, perhaps push it to 180bhp?

Not looking to do anything now as it needs a good service and a few things sorting but for future reference, just wondered what the answer is.

    Thanks

Hia, I've got the same engine as you mate and apparently they're not tuneable at all, well not for a reasonable price and even when u look at chargers and turbs, which seem to cost silly money for the power increase. But, that's just what I've heard from the forums and such. Personally, I love the idea of a supercharger on mine, cos nobody has chargers and it'd be different, plus they are fairly quick anyway and would be cool to get there a bit quicker. But it's what ya like and can afford at the end of the day. I looked at remaps and all sorts, but they give minimal power increases and cost a fair whack for most upgrades.

Hope this helps, as it's my first post.

The question is not how tuneable, but how deep are your pockets

i would just have some fun in it, learn the ropes and buy a 6cyl e36 when insurance allows to do so, or even better, an engine swap, but then, if you declare it, its back on the insurance thing

as said there isnt a great deal to gain without going FI which i doubt is doable on the cheap unless your all over fabriction!
but they are great handling cars with a few quid thrown at them in the right places

that said i've supercharged mine and dont regret it!

    SUPERCHARGED 318IS
