I've always been a huge Bimmer fan having owned an E30, a 7 series and now I have my Black E34 525i SE which I love to drive and have decided to keep and modify. External mods are personal taste but engine mods and tuning are more important to me as I want to get the best out of my car but still maintain the luxury saloon comfort.

Any ideas are welcome, I was thinking Chip/Re-map, performance panel filter, performance manifold and exhaust and maybe even a fuel injection upgrade but like I said I'm new to all this. Thank you.

Having spoke to a local BMW specialist garage they informed me that there isn't a great deal that can be done to the engine to increase performance. I have thought about getting a Jim Conforti chip from the states, getting a performance exhaust and whacking a K&N panel filter on it. The engines the standard 192 bhp at present but would like to push it beyond 200 bhp. I think a turbo or supercharger are a bit excessive and I am even toying with the idea of selling the old girl and buying an M535i. I think they look and sound awesome!

Instead of a panel filter, have thought about and induction kit?

I believe that the Jim Conforti chip is for US spec cars only.
What about US spec M3 cams?

You could indeed have it chipped, and like mentioned US M3 cams could be installed before hand for more power

My E34 525i puts out 208bhp and 205lb torque with mods that really didn't cost the Earth.
19lb injectors $75 dollars (delivered to the UK)
Custom cold air intake £10 (home made)
    Stainless cone filter £40 (Overpriced!)
Adjustable fuel pressure regulator (actually had to reduce pressure to stop bad idling and jittery driving) £35 (Second hand includes gauge)
    Performance chip £25

Low down torque is improved and it pulls better through the gears. Its also nice to have 6850rpm rev limit, even if it makes naff all power up there! LOL
