The US guys fitting the 540i/M3 maf were doing it on the vanos engine.
If you want a larger MAF on the non vanos, you'll want the MAF from an E34 M5 3.8, which would cost about £200-300 second hand if you can find one.

The non vanos engines have a hot wire MAF, different to the vanos hot film type.

There's also a possibility of getting one from a Z32 Nissan 300ZX, as they also have a platinum wire MAF, but again, these are going to be rare and very expensive.

Some people have tried stuff like that, but the ECU is calibrated to the MAF tube size.
Using the element inside a large tube means more air can come in than the ECU measures, and the car will run lean.

    Yep.
It's pretty simple to do on a vanos engine, as you can use the calibration data from the E36 M3 3.0 which uses a similar MAF, but the next size up.
On the non vanos, you'd have to use the calibration table from the M5 3.8, and get an M5 maf which are like hen's teeth.
