Vanos has variable valve timing on the inlet cam. It was more for emissions than power. The vanos has the same power as a non-vanos engine.

Its a bit one sided for me to say as mine doesnt have Vanos either. I see it as one less thing to go wrong...

When I had mine chipped, the guy said you can get some decent gains from the early engines. More so than the Vanos ones..

    Hey mate.

Just thought i'd let you now a few things to expect from ur non vanos 325.

Firstly do the usaul things and change the air filter for a dave F or K and N.
BBTH FROM ALPINA is ur best bet i got my first bbtb from ebay and although i gain about 5 to 6 bhp in the entire range my fuel consumption dropped to 14 mpg, It is important to make sure that not only the bore is bored out so to speak but THE BUTTERFLY IS THE CORECT SIZE AND SHAPE.

Sometimes the little things like a service oil and plugs can make quite a differance remembering that ur car isn't a puppy anymore . lol

Next i would say an exhaust, there's loads out there but read through the treads on here and other sites and get a feel for whats good.

Once these basics are done and ur nearly ready to start spending big BIG money ........STOP.............

Get a some one to remap ur car. i,ve made the mistake of going for what ever was avaible and cause i live in the back of beyond in scotland my only option was to get a superchip. Now i'm not saying their S@@t just it's a standard map and i think if you can get someone who maps to ur cars mods. Again there are loads and check the sites and get a feel for whats good.

So now u are happy with ur mods and you've followed these simple guidelines you are almost ready and at the stage i am now.

Cause my car is an old dog now 06/91 and before i go and spend even more money on say the m52 stroker option i think i'll start replacing some vital components like MAF sensor / crankshaft sensor / lambda senors and such like to ensure everthing is okey dokey.......

I hope it helps a little and the last thing is remember. Theres no point in making ur motor 200bhp super flying machine without first doing ur suspension and brakes but i supose we could leave that for another time.......

    Cheers Donut...............................

thank you for the advice. i'v been looking into CAI atm but cant decide how big air filter to fit. thinking of 100mm pipe connection + DIY protection from engine. need a diff too. found a 3.23 m3 diff but now figuring out how subframe looks like lol (i dont know the subframe meaning lol) next thing im thinking of a seat with belts safety first. i all ready got suspension for some draging ready including breaks. p.s. if someone could explain how subframe from m3 diff looks like (a pic) would be dandy. thx

the subframe is the its the shaft at the back of the diffs have to be swapped as the m3 is 6 bolts and the 325 is 5 or if u get the entire driveshaft its a direct blot up
