    Hi All

I have had my car diagnoised and the following fault come up

    control unit : glow plug

    glow plug1
    glow plug 2
    glow plug 3

i spoke to my garage asking him to get these change so i will get better miles.

he goes this is nothing to do with the miles you get. Where the people that did do the diagnostic said you need to get these parts changed for better fuel.

i am currently putting in 65.00 and returning 320 miles.

    its an automatic

    i drive urban and town

The computer says when i fill up 480 miles to go

by the time the diesel has finished i only get 320 miles

anyone suggest what can be the problem or would changing the control unit make a difference

Glow plugs help an engine to start - once it's started, they're redundant. Your mechanic is partly right - non-working glow plugs will mean a diesel is really difficult to cold start in cold weather, so it can waste fuel & throw out a big cloud of black smoke when it does start as the unburnt fuel ignites - thereby wasting diesel (but not a lot)!

Glow plugs make no difference to the running of a car once it's started.

Sorry but I would have to disagree with you Brendan, afaik the glow plugs in the common rail M47 & M57 diesels are used to start the car but only from a certain temperature and the glow plugs are then used to aid emissions I assume by monitoring values from combustion.

    Quote from e-maps:-
" Seriously, they are used whilst the engine is running to measure the performance of each cylinder and how effective the combustion is.
Without the glow plugs working this effective combustion process cannot be carried out and effects the mpg. "

If your sure that the car is running fine and no other problems.

Consider whether your suffering from fuel theft? Unlikely, but possible.

One thing that has not been mentioned - is there a problem with the fuel return from the high pressure rail? If the return line is leaking (it can be anywhere) this might be the cause of the excessive fuel consumption.

Failing all ther other advice given to you recently mate, go to BMW and ask them to take a look for you.

checkout realoem.com and look at the fuel system to give you a better idea how it is put together.

Genuine BMW Glow Plugs function according to an innovative 3-phase glow system. That means they glow before the start, during the starting phase, after the start and during engine operation. Pollutants and noise emissions are thus minimised.
