I have a 2003 320d BMW with the following peculiar problem:
    - if I accelerate to approx. 160-180km/h (~3000 RPM) the transmission warning light comes on, the engine revs up to 4000 RPM and there is power loss.
    - if I make a full stop and start again, the engine is still over-reved and has significant power loss.
    - right after the event, if I stop the car, take the key out of the ignition and wait 30seconds, it resets and works just fine until the next time the warning light comes on.

Please help, the repair shop estimates a 2000 Euro invoice and I think this error could be fixed much cheaper.

    Gabriel

Have you had the fault codes read for the engine and gearbox yet?

If not it should be your first port of call

LOL the more I read these threads the happier I am my model has no OBC.

Its the same all over it seems, 80% of car problems nowadays consist of electrical/sensor/EM problems rather than the good old fashioned mechanical ones!

That is unfortunately the way it is going, everybody will need a scanner to fix their car

I'm sure this is deliberate on part of manufacturers, built-in necessity of visits to dealers/franchises.

    Hi,

This is my first ever reply / message on this forum. I have an E46 320D 2003. Have got the injectors changed recently and turbo re-made. The problem I am suffering now is that at a traffic light when rpms were low, my car just shut itself off. I tried the ignition again and it started fine. Recently had the same engine cut off during reversing. I have noticed my rpm needle shivers a little when engine is in idle mode. Please help me out what could be the reasons. I am very depressed, can't seem to know what to do. Is there no solution to my problems :(
