Default 2002 E46 316 Compact. Power steering noise

Hi,
Been getting a whirring noise when I set off to work in the morning from the steering wheel. It goes after the first turn of the wheel.
I think it maybe because of the cold.
Is this normal?

Cheers

have you checked the power steering fluid mate? ... pretty sure our cars have your standard hydraulic power steering pump so low fluid levels could cause similar noises that you have described..

Yes B,
The fluid wasn't even showing on the power steering dipstick.
All ok now.
Sorry Rayman, didn't realise you meant PS fluid.
