2001 E46 330d - Faulty ABS/DSC control unit!

Hi,

I've had three warning lights on my dash for some time now (ABS/Handbrake/Amber) and had it booked into a garage for repair. They managed to fit me a new wheel speed sensor and wiring harness (the old one was snagged) but the problem didn't go away and now I'm being told I have to purchase a new ABS/DSC control unit.

The unit is located in the engine bay - passenger side (see image)

Can anyone advise where I can get a replacement part? I only need the plastic electronic bit, not the aluminium block. Is it possible to get these repaired? DIY job?

Mate there's a guy on eBay that will rebuild you fir £100 with 2 years warranty. Just type abs modulator should come up thanks.

Also he will only charge you £30 if that unit is not faulty for testing hope that helps

I hope to god you did not get charged for a poor diagnosis and replacement parts you did not need. If this were to be read by BMW's GT1/DIS computer, it would have told you the exact problem. Yes, the 2 wheel speed sensors are the most common problem, but if it did not rectify your problem... It would have isolated what was to blame.

There is also a wheel angle sensor as well.

Uncanny Exactly the same problem I'm having at the mo as well
I also have an non-op speedo so have also asumed a dodgy speed sensor.

My problem comes and gos though sometime all is fine and sometimes its like blackpool illumations on the dash OBD

At the mo its sitting at a Indy ready to be tested tomorrow. Hopefully just a sensor..

i had that with my e46 330d, wheel angle sensor, bmw picked it up straight away. reckon i hit a bump that knocked it all wrong.

Thanks for the advice guys - yeah I do suspect that they replaced the wheel speed sensor/wiring harness without a proper diagnosis - it seems coincidental that both a sensor and abs control unit would go at the same time?

To be honest I do trust the guy but with the weather at the minute I just want this thing sorted out, it feels like steering a boat at the minute!

I got the fault codes....
0500 Vehicle speed sensor ,no signal (doesn't say which one)
1E00 Can connection to ASC

And a whole heap of others for Rad fan, Glow plugs, electrical aux heater, distance sensors,etc etc

He was confused that it didn't bring up which speed sensor as it should do so hes cleared the fault codes and taking it for a drive tomorrow to see what pops up.

This place does them, i have used them a lot for the Bosch ABS/ASC modules.

Problem is, sometimes they cant be rebuilt as the circuit boards inside melt. They will supply you a new Bosch unit that has a good warranty.

I will post a pic of a faulty unit later, as I have one sat here....

hi all, driving home tonight my speedo stopped working along with the mpg gauge, the handbrake, abs light and the traction control lights all came on, the speedo and mpg gauge has started to work then stops again, the abs and red handbrake lights plus t/c are on all the time, there seems to be no difference in power and everything else is working. i know my front pads are very low so the wear sensor has lit up could this be causing a short? i have now disconnected the pad sensor and disconnected reconnected the battery but still as of now no speedo, mph gauge, and the t/c h/brake and abs lights are on. help please, seems like this could be a abs wheel sensor or a abs control unit?????
