    Hello Brianz,

I'm experiencing similar issues on my 316SE 2001. From what I've been able to find out from investigating my problem is it could either be: Problem with the water pump (should see leakage), loose connection on one of the pipes (again should see leakage) or a crack in the expansion tank(also should show leakage) or head gasket gone (check for white milky colour under oil cap). I've been unable to ID a leak so I took it to a mate who used to be a BMW mechanic and he had it for 2 days and gave it a thorough check and couldn't find why it would leak nor where it is coming from.

I've put in about a litre of coolant in 2 months, it was reassuring to know though that it is nothing serious and I've just put it down to age of the car and the 101,000 miles on the clock and I can live with topping up the coolant fairly frequent.

    Hope this helps you.

    Hello,

Going through something similar myself. I have not reached a resolution yet. I believe it to be possibly cylinder head related.

See below link to my thread which is still ongoing:

hi, i have recently solved a water leak on my e46 318, there is a water pipe going from the expansion tank to the thermostat housing and inside the thermostat end of the pipe there is a rubber o ring which had split, im not sure if you can just change the o ring as i bought the whole new pipe as i also needed a new bleed valve, it may be worth you checking that out.
    hope this helps.

2 main offenders for coolant leaks on the E46 are cracked expansion bottle or bowed and distorted radiator matrix..
330i sport a big chunk of berlin...
