Hi guys, as mentioned in another thread, I may need a new MAF. Just wanted to confirm 2things about these.
Firstly, are the E36 MAF's made specific for each engone size? I know obviously it'd have to be an E36 MAF, but which engines within the E36's have interchangable MAF's? For example will a MAF for a 318 be the same MAF as the one for my 328? or do the 4pot engines have one type of MAF, and the 6pots have a different type of MAF? etc..
Secondly, would the MAF for a 1993 E36 fit my 1995 E36? (Obviously also depending on the outcome of my first question). Mine's a 328i, single vanos engine btw, if that makes any difference...aparently pre '95 engines are non-vanos?
Cheers,
Baz.
Put the last 7 digits of your VIN into this website then look up Fuel Preparation and click on the MAF Part Number. This will give you the compatibilty.
Equally get the part number on your MAF and put it in where it say part number here http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do and it will show all the cars that part is used on :thumbsup

Thanks guys. Looks as though its the same as the rest of the intake system, in the sense the 323 and 328 engines run pretty much the same/similar parts.
Thanks again guys,
Baz.
Yeah it's the same on the 323i and the 328i. (and also the 5s and 7s with these engines). It will need to be an M52 engine (95 onwards) so the earlier M50 engines will be no good. Also I would advise against a pattern MAF - I bought one that was a lot of trouble, didn't throw any fault codes but caused the car to run very rich and fail emissions. A second hand one off a 728 sorted the problem instantly.
yh, i might be able to get one off another E36. I'd rather go for a 2nd hand one that i know is good, than a cheap version. But its a 93 model, not sure of the engine yet.
EDIT: So is this MAF that's available to me no good? Will it definately have to be for an engine that's 95 onwards? if so, i'll go the route of using realoem.com and sourcing a new one.
Otherwise i can just check whether this 1993 model is either a 323/328, and use the MAF from it if it is? Am i right in saying this?
Also, my understanding from wikipedia leads me to believe it may be possible to use any MAF from any 6 pot engine that's 95 onward (according to wikipedia, all 6 pot engines from 95-01 were m52. before that were M50 and after that were M54.)
thanks. i'll give that a go after having the codes read again. While im at it, i may as well clean the ICV too. Can i use brake cleaner for that, or should i stick to electric contact cleaner for that too?
All the 6 pot engines from 1995 were M52 engines (except for the S52 of course) but I think the MAF was different in the 2 litre. Could be wrong though. The MAFs all have a Siemens part number on them so it'll be easy to make sure that you've got the right one.
tried this and it worked a charm. will keep this problem updated in my other post of the symptoms i was getting.
thanks again.
