Quite a few faults with my new (old) E60 525D

Got the car last week and have purchased one of the cheap ELM 327 OBD interfaces off of Ebay.

Just ran a scan using the BMWhat android app, and got a number (understatement) of errors.

Have tried to do a bit of research, but would appreciate some forum wisdon/knowledge if possible?

I seem to have all 6 glow plugs erroring. A search on the internet suggests this is more likely to be caused by a faulty control module than 6 glow plugs being knackered - is this true?

DPF code 4667 - not sure what this is, but the internet suggests that a regen wont happen without all glow plugs working correctly. Is this correct?

The car can be a little lumpy for 5 to 10 secs from start. Is this because of the glowplugs? Seems ok when i turn off then back on again (i know nothing about cars!)

There are other codes. Heres the full list. Would really appreciate your help. Thanks

I agree, mine was riddled when I bought it.

Clear them all and see what returns.

You should expect the glowplug errors to come back.
You do have glowplug errors on all 6 though which is common. It points to a failed glowplug controller. I paid about £75 for the part and changed it myself.
All the glowplug errors have prevented DPF regenerations.

If you change the controller, see if you have swirl flaps fitted when the inlet manifold is off and remove them (by fitting blanks in their place).

Google for Hidden Menu and check the temps, pound to a pinch of $hit you have failed stats. About £80 for parts and you can do these yourself.

That should get you back regenerating the DPF, hopefully it should clear. I had HUGE plumes of smoke out the back on my first regeneration, enough to really make me worried but the more the merrier.

You cold also do with a proper cable and diagnose with a laptop. Google BMTechnic for the cable and software (less than £40).

Thanks Gents

I got the fault codes from a free trial of the software, but cant clear them down so probably need to invest in a cable like the 1 chris suggested. I had an ODB cable for use with my VW/Audi cars, but suppose this wont work with the Beemer?

I had the flaps removed last week, but hadnt done the scan then. Neighbour is a mechanin who did the work, and needs to take it apart again to change the breather to the vortex type so will hopefully get him to do the GP controller at the same time.

Chris, when you say stat, is that thermostat? How would i know if its failed?

Thanks

Craig

You need to go into the hidden menu to check the temps. Once you have it up go for a motorway/dual carriageway drive for 20 mins and check the temps.
Too many people try to identify the temps whilst idling, driving around town, this is no good. the car needs to be up to temp and on a steady run.

The Glowplug Controlleris in a different location to the Crankcase breather but if your mechanic has done the swirl flaps, he can do the controller (although he will probably hate you for it afterwards!!)

Thanks Chris

Did a few tests the weeken and on a run the car only gets to 70ish degrees, so looks like i need to change the thermostat.

I now have the BM Technic cable and cleared all the faults, however on a rescan he glow plug faults return. As the car is 8 years old and i have no record of them ever being changed, i guess i will get them done along with the controller.

Not a bad idea, you can test them with a decent multimeter, they should be between 0.5 and 2.5 ohms between the core and the engine block.

Trouble is to measure them you have to get the inlet manifold off so if you go through that hassle, you may as well change them, depends on your wallet.
