I decided that even with a warranty I'd get my swirl flaps done as it just wouldn't be worth the hassle if they did go...
So £48 and about 2-3 hours later, I have swirl flap blanking plates in place and a cleaner EGR valve!
All went very smoothly, followed some excellent instructions on the net (can't remember where but sure a google will suffice...) and am looking forward to seeing if it makes any difference to the driving of the beast!
If not, then it still gives me a great piece of mind that somethings not going to be dropping in my engine any time soon :cool
Now just to try and get my warranty to fit me some new thermostats...
I did my swirl flaps recently on a 525d, didn't notice any performance difference really but I don't seem to be getting as much smoke when I put my foot down??
Not sure if that is a consequence of cleaning the EGR etc or just my imagination lol
Can someone give me a hand doing this in Basingstoke area? I havent got all tools, and I am not brave enough to do it on my own. I asked some mechanics but they dont wanna do it, as it is not a standard thing.
Can someone help me to do it in the next few months? I can drive to you (with some beers or some £ you ask)
Why don`t you phone a good local indy?
It won`t cost that much and you know it`s done right.
A couple of good indys in Hampshire near me (and Basingstoke) Lee Shannon in Bentley or Chris Plummer in Aldershot.
Just re-read my post and the "you know it is done right " bit is in no way aimed at you xmak! It could read like it is.
I meant rather than do it yourself ,for someone like me who aint got a clue mechanically.Thats why mine is going to an indy.
Its a very kind offer of you and good to see forum members helping each other out.
Happy Easter to you all.
As stetheblue has said there is great guides on this mod but i imagine to alot it looks abit daunting to tackle as a first DIY.
I've done a friends 320d with him as he didn't feel confident enough. And I've had my manifold off at least 4 times now for various reasons (not for the swirlflap mod my model engine dosent have them) getting quicker each time

Following the tuts available will enable anyone to do this mod, it's really straight forward... no special tools, just a socket set and basic spanners and drives... If your local indy doesn't want to do it google bmw specialists in your area.... People would be amazed but every area that has a stealers normally has at least one specialists as people just don't want to pay the stealers labour rates

What milage swirl flaps should be replaced?Mine has 63k miles, is it time or not?
I have 1 year warranty on my car but I'd like to save a hassle form me when something will go wrong.
If it's a BMW warranty I'd leave well alone and be happy with the knowledge you'll get a new engine if the worst does happen. If after market warranty I'd be less comfortable.
When do they fail? some never fail, some go early some go late. It's a gamble.
Your car is a 2007 though, long after the problem is supposed to have been fixed.
I was thinking of taking a bmw warranty out, but decided against it in the end and went somewhere else, reason being way to pricey at a £1100 for the year which works out £5500 for say 5 years.
So in the end the car which cost me 13k would actually cost 18.5k, I mean how many people honestly think they have brought the right motor if they believe its going to need £1100 of work done on it every year.
Yes bmw's go wrong and someone will be along shortly on here and tell me its worth every penny, but to me this is the person who has been unlucky and picked up a bad egg in the first place.
People who pay this sort of money are a sandwich short of a picnic
I didn't trust any of them mate TBH, until a friend of mine took out a warranty direct one after having an AUC warranty, and after 6 months of taking out the policy things were happening to his motor he then took it to the dealers who then told him the price for labour/parts etc will be £980.
He said WD didn't pay the dealer directly he had to fill in his paperwork and 10 days later he got his cheque through the door for the full amount.
So he could of just been lucky or WD have improved their service, but I went for this at £326 per annum which is 6-700 less then bmw's.
Fingers crossed nothing happen to my motor and then WD decide not to payout as I won't be best pleased, I will then be on here cursing them.
My Dad has a Warranty Direct policy on his SL55, he's just had over a grands worth of work done and they paid out within a week or two. (as said, you pay and they reimburse with a cheque)
I'll definitely consider them when my Stratstone warranty runs out in January.
however i've heard that such places are very strict on looking at previous service history i.e. one forum thread i've read is that the guy decided to have oil and filter change more often or decided to go for an inspection 1 vs oil and filter, well it didn't follow the service guide even though had more work done and they kicked up, not sure which 3rd party warranty it was though
They use Unipart who ever they are and nationwide autocentre...
