2002 E39 530i Sport - How to Reset Dash Service Light

Hi guys,

Does anybody know how to reset the service light indicators on the dash where the mileage is usually displayed. There are usually 4-5 green bars that go out as you draw nearer too a service.

It is currently showing one yellow light but the vehicle was being maintained by a mechanic that does not know how to reset these lights.

I am told there is a tool required for this, is this true? If so where can I get one and is it safe to do?

Any help would be much apprieciated as per usual.

I think this is the newer version, not the E39 one so be careful if you follow it.

Will see if I can find the one you are looking for, I have it as a printout, not on the computer but will type it in if no one else has it.

Yeah - the vid above is an E60 procedure.

The E39 is


1.Switch ignition OFF.

2.Locate button on dash between the fuel guage and speedo.

3.press button and hold whilst turning the ignition to position 1.

4.After 5 seconds the words 'OIL SERVICE or INSPECTION' are shown
along with the message "reset" or "re".

5.Release button then press it again, after a further 5 seconds the
message "reset" starts to flash.

6.Release button then press and release button again

7.The new service interval is now displayed.

8.Press and release button, the message "END SIA" is now displayed.

9.Switch the ignition OFF.

Thanks alot for the advice gentleman (Im assuming your male) it really is apprieciated, I will give this a try tommorow, obviously not the procedure for the E60, but the one mentioned for my beloved E39.

I hope one day I can repay the favor, but on second thoughts, I hope not because that would mean you had a fault with your machines, which I would not wish on any 'Ultimate Driving Machine' owner!!!

hi, if you have the round service light conector under bonnet you can use one of these, about £15 to buy at any good parts place.
